The average age of business owners who work with The Icehouse is getting younger – in 2011, 9% of Owner Manager Programme alumni were 35 and under, now that’s 28%. Is this indicative of a wider market shift? Have a read of this article in The Post featuring our Chief Growth Officer Olivia Blaylock.
We often talk about the amazing power of The Icehouse network and this month our Kiwi Business Story features Owner Manager Programme alumni Jason Snashall from Orakei Marine. Jason’s story is a cool example of how a chat with the BNZ led him to the Owner Manager Programme and a new way of running his business, check it out especially, but not only, if you love getting out on the water too!

Productivity - How do we lift it?
Labour productivity fell 0.9% in the year ended March 2023, according to figures released by Stats NZ last month. It’s the largest fall since 2009. But what does that actually mean and how is it impacting our future? The New Zealand initiative wraps it up nicely in this article.
What can we do individually in our businesses to lift productivity and stop the lag and the downtime that risks the country’s growth screeching to a halt?
Two managers from Bay of Plenty businesses have been working on the problem as part of their time on the Leadership Development Programme. The Programme requires attendees to complete a project for their business, giving them an awesome opportunity to work on the business rather than in it and produce positive impact right away!
We are excited to share the news about TWO $5,000 scholarships available towards the Owner Manager Programme this year. If you're an Alumni, you may have already read about the Raewyn Goodwin scholarship for business owners referred by Alumni – you can read more and submit a referral for the scholarship here.
We are stoked to have another scholarship open to Bay of Plenty business owners, offered by alumni business, Likeable Lab Agency. Head Honcho and Owner Manager Programme alumni Nick McDonald wanted to give back to The Icehouse network after experiencing the impact on his own business. Following conversations with myself and our team, the Likeable Lab Agency Scholarship is being launched as the best way to support what The Icehouse does. You can apply now, or if you know a Bay of Plenty business owner looking for "what next", please share this scholarship with them!
In Nick's own words: "The Owner Manager Programme (OMP) was huge for me. Not just the stuff I learned, but the people I met and the ideas that it generated. I have a whole new business model that formed out of the ideas and mentoring from OMP. Our HQ is in Tauranga so we are offering this for another Bay of Plenty business."
We're so excited to have alumni like Nick supporting us to get more businesses on programme - thanks, Nick! To apply for this scholarship or to share it with a business owner, please visit the scholarship application page, or get in touch with Maryse Dinan (Regional Lead for Bay of Plenty, Waikato & Taranaki) at m.dinan@theicehouse.co.nz.
All the best,
Liz Wotherspoon Chief Executive of The Icehouse
